He was toppled and killed in 1987 by a coup led by Blaise Compaor\u00e9, who then became president and ruled the country until his removal in 2014.<\/li><li>In 2015, Roch Marc Christian Kabor\u00e9 was elected president in the general elections and re-elected again in 2020 for a second term.<\/li><li>Burkina Faso has been severely impacted by the growth of Islamist terror since 2015. The nation has faced an Islamist insurgency that has spread from neighbouring Mali and Niger. More than a million people have been displaced across the country. This has sparked outrage among the military and civilians and wreaked havoc on the once-thriving tourism industry.<\/li><li>Burkina Faso\u2019s army stated on January 24th, 2022 that it had overthrown the civilian-elected government and its President, Roch Marc Kabor\u00e9. The military cited the reason being <strong>Kabor\u00e9\u2019s government\u2019s inability to unify the West African nation<\/strong>\u00a0and respond to challenges, including an\u00a0<strong>Islamist insurgency<\/strong>\u00a0that has generated turmoil in the country.<\/li><li>Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba was declared &#8220;President.<\/li><li>The United Nations, the African Union, the United States, and France condemned this military coup in Africa.<\/li><li>After eight months, the country is now witnessing another military coup, with a new self-proclaimed leader, Capt.
