Its purpose is to combat global corruption with the help of civil societal anti-corruption measures and prevent criminal activities arising from corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"key-points\"><strong>Key Points<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-verse\" style=\"font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\"><li>The Index assigns a<strong>&nbsp;ranking to 180 countries<\/strong>&nbsp;and territories based on their perceived levels of public sector corruption.<\/li><li>It relies on 13 independent data sources.<\/li><li>It uses a scale of zero to 100, with zero being highly corrupt and 100 being very clean.<\/li><li>The CPI report tells us that control of corruption has stagnated or&nbsp;<strong>worsened in 86% of countries over the last decade.<\/strong><\/li><li>World&nbsp;average score remains 43, and more than two-thirds of countries (68%) score below 50.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Since 2012, scores have<strong>&nbsp;improved significantly in 25 countries<\/strong>, but have<strong>&nbsp;dropped significantly in 23 countries<\/strong>&nbsp;over the same period.<\/li><li>Best Countries:&nbsp;This year, the&nbsp;best performing&nbsp;countries are <strong>Denmark, Finland and New Zealand<\/strong>, each with a score of 88. <strong>Singapore<\/strong> (85), <strong>Norway<\/strong> (85), <strong>Sweden<\/strong> (85), <strong>Switzerland<\/strong> (84), the <strong>Netherlands<\/strong> (82), <strong>Luxembourg<\/strong> (81) and <strong>Germany<\/strong> (80) complete the top 10.<\/li><li>Worst Countries:&nbsp;<strong>South Sudan<\/strong>&nbsp;(11),&nbsp;<strong>Syria<\/strong>&nbsp;(13) and&nbsp;<strong>Somalia<\/strong>&nbsp;(13) remain at the bottom of the Index.<\/li><li>Countries&nbsp;with&nbsp;armed conflict&nbsp;and&nbsp;authoritarianism&nbsp;have&nbsp;the lowest scores,&nbsp;such as&nbsp;<strong>Venezuela<\/strong> (14), <strong>Afghanistan<\/strong> (16), <strong>North<\/strong> <strong>Korea<\/strong> (16), <strong>Yemen<\/strong> (16), <strong>Equatorial<\/strong> <strong>Guinea<\/strong> (17), <strong>Libya<\/strong> (17) and <strong>Turkmenistan<\/strong> (19).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fall-of-democracy\"><strong>Fall of Democracy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-verse\" style=\"font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">Human rights and democracy are under attack all over the world, from the repression of opposition supporters in Belarus to the closure of media outlets and civil society organisations in Nicaragua, to the violence against protesters in Sudan and the killing of human rights defenders in the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-verse\" style=\"font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Rights, checks and balances are increasingly being eroded<\/strong> not only in countries with systematic corruption and weaknesses but also in established democracies.
