The hub, based in Afrigen in Cape Town, South Africa, will collaborate with a network of technology recipients (spokes) in low- and middle-income countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-verse\" style=\"font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">Bio E already produces a variety of essential vaccines, including Corbevax, a second-generation COVID-19 vaccine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-verse\" style=\"font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">WHO and partners will collaborate with the Indian government and Bio E to develop a roadmap and put in place the <strong>required training and support<\/strong> so that the company may begin manufacturing mRNA vaccines as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an mRNA vaccine?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-verse\" style=\"font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\">DNA encodes protein molecules, which carry out all of life&#8217;s functions. The information in DNA initially transfers to a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule, which <strong>contains instructions for making proteins<\/strong>. The mRNA gains entry into the cytoplasm and instructs the cells to make the protein upon vaccination. The <strong>protein antigen is considered foreign by our body<\/strong>, which leads to a series of events that eventually leads to the activation of our immune response against the target virus or disease.
