A New Capital for Indonesia

“Nusantara” means “archipelago”. An archipelago is a group of islands; Indonesia has over 17,000 islands and is the world’s largest archipelago.

Due to increasing sea levels and significant congestion on the heavily populated island of Java, Indonesia’s parliament has approved the transfer of the capital.

Jakarta has long struggled with severe infrastructure issues and flooding, which have been aggravated by climate change, with scientists forecasting that up to a third of the city might be underwater by 2050. Over the last few decades, the city has become overcrowded and exceedingly polluted.
