  • The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released the Global Innovation Index 2022, naming Switzerland the world’s most innovative economy for the 12th year in a row.
  • The United States took second place, followed by Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. These are the world’s most innovative economies, with China on the threshold of the top 10.
  • The GII (Global Innovation Index) uses more than 80 indicators—from research and development investment, education expenditure, patent filing rates, high-tech products, internationally known brands, and feature films—to rank 130 economies across the globe.
  • The Index places its hopes in two novel innovation waves:
    • The Digital Age innovation wave, which is based on supercomputing, artificial intelligence, and automation and is poised to have a significant productivity impact across all sectors, including services, and help to achieve scientific breakthroughs in basic sciences across all fields,
    • The Deep Science innovation wave is based on breakthroughs in biotechnologies, nanotechnologies, new materials, and other sciences that revolutionize innovations in four critical societal fields: health, food, the environment, and mobility.
  • Many countries use the index to evaluate and improve their innovation ecosystems, and the GII is used as a reference in economic plans and policies.
