A referendum is a system in which people (or electorate) are called upon to vote on a particular decision. NEW CALEDONIA held a referendum to vote whether their country should remain as part of France or not.
As per reports, overall turn out was 42%, and 96% who took part said ‘no’ to independence. The referendum was boycotted by pro-independence groups and separatist activists who wanted to postpone the referendum because of the pandemic.
French President Emmanuel Macron said, “Tonight France is more beautiful because New Caledonia decided to stay.”
