Voters in the French island territory of New Caledonia chose overwhelmingly to remain part of France in a referendum

As per reports, overall turn out was 42%, and 96% who took part said ‘no’ to independence. The referendum was boycotted by pro-independence groups and separatist activists who wanted to postpone the referendum because of the pandemic.
French President Emmanuel Macron said, “Tonight France is more beautiful because New Caledonia decided to stay.”
