The objective of the report is to track the progress being made to eradicate the world of nuclear weapons, as set out in the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons (TPNW), which came into force in 2021.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is a legally binding agreement that prohibits nuclear arsenals, leading toward their total elimination. However, the world’s nine nuclear-armed states (China, France, India, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, United Kingdom, United States) are yet to join.

Key findings of the report

  1. Worlds nine nuclear-armed states have a combined arsenal of 12,705 warheads at the beginning of 2022.
  2. Approximately 90% of the world’s nuclear warheads are owned by Russia and US. 
  3. Countries including China, India, North Korea, and Pakistan continued to increase their stockpiles last year and, at this rate, could soon reverse the overall pace of decline in nuclear weapons.

About NWBM

  1. It was established as a research program in 2018, produced and published by Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), a partner organization of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
  2. ICAN is a coalition of NGOs promoting adherence to and implementation of the UN nuclear weapon ban treaty.
  3. It evaluates nuclear weapons-related policies and practices of each of the 197 states that are party/not party to global treaties on nuclear weapon reduction.
