Read moreAs per a new rule laid out by the Taliban in Afghanistan, women will require male relatives as escorts to travel beyond 45 miles (72km). It also called on vehicle owners to refuse rides to women not wearing hijab (headscarves).
Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, known for enforcing harsh interpretations of the Sharia law and emphasizing strict dress codes for women, issued the guidance stating that the law is designed to prevent women from coming to any harm or “disturbance.” The Taliban continues to implement stringent rules to curb women’s rights despite promising otherwise.
Human Rights Watch criticized this action stating it to be “..direction of making women prisoners”.
Earlier, the Taliban also barred girls from attending school and banned women from work. Women are also forbidden from appearing on TV channels.
