What is a Blood moon?
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon. This hides the Moon from the direct sunlight. When this happens, the only light reaching the Moon’s surface is from the edges of the Earth’s atmosphere. The air molecules from Earth’s atmosphere scatter out most blue light. The remaining light reflects onto the Moon’s surface with a red glow, making the Moon appear red in the night sky.
The more dust or clouds in Earth’s atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the Moon will appear. It is called “Blood Moon.”
What is Super Blood Moon?
Two celestial events- the Supermoon and a total lunar eclipse- are observed together, giving rise to a phenomenon also known as a Super Blood Moon.
A supermoon occurs when the Moon’s orbit is closest to the Earth and at the same time it is full Moon. The Moon, therefore, appears reddish-orange in color and really big as well.
