The Human Rights Council is a body within the UN that is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights around the world.
Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, each elected member of UNHRC serves for three years (the Council is made up of 47 UN Member States). Russia’s three-year term as a member of the Council began on January 1, 2021.
Possible Implications of the decision
- Strong and United International Response to further increase pressure on Russia and on countries that are neutral or aligned with Russia.
- The risk of aggravating the divisions further intensifies the conflict and jeopardizes peace efforts.
